Privacy legislation is not new . Today, the privacy law already wants to protect citizens against misuse of their personal data and lays down the rights of the citizen and the obligations of the processor. However, those duties are rarely enforced. Only in a few sectors (health care, for example) does the company or organization have to appoint a safety consultant and comply with the ISO27001 standard.

The legislation that came into effect in May 2018 is better known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Companies and organizations that process personal data of citizens of the European Union must be able to demonstrate that they have taken all possible technical and organizational measures to protect this data.
